25 Years Ago in the Nineties: Alannah Myles “Black Velvet”

Toronto-born singer Alannah Myles has reached Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart twice, with both appearances coming with back-to-back singles that each reached the Top 40 in 1990. The second single, “Love Is,” peaked at number 36 in June of that year as a follow-up to the hit for which she is most remembered. Exactly 25 years ago, that first bigger hit single — “Black Velvet” — climbed into the number one position for a two-week reign, on its way to winning a Grammy for the year’s Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
