25 Years Ago in the Nineties: Boyz II Men “On Bended Knee”
While not necessarily common, replacing oneself at number one on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart has, in the past two decades, happened with much greater frequency than before, with the likes of Taylor Swift, The Black Eyed Peas, Drake, and others joining a list of just over a dozen acts who have done it. Heading into the fall of 1994, though, only two acts had ever replaced themselves at number one, and they are arguably the two most successful acts in pop music history: Elvis Presley and The Beatles. Exactly 25 years ago, Boyz II Men made it three when their song “On Bended Knee” rose to the top of the Hot 100, displacing their previous hit, “I’ll Make Love To You,” after its fourteen-week reign.
