25 Years Ago in the Nineties: Louie Louie “Sittin’ In The Lap Of Luxury”
Los Angeles-born musician Louis Cordero may be best known for playing the role of Madonna’s boyfriend in her “Borderline” video. However, Cordero also charted twice himself on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart. Using the name Louie Louie, Cordero hit number 19 with “Sittin’ In The Lap Of Luxury” and then number 69 with “I Wanna Get Back With You” — two consecutive singles from his 1990 album The State I’m In. Exactly 25 years ago, “Sittin’ In The Lap Of Luxury” was entering its peak position, where it would spend one week.
Louie Louie should have really hit it big….he just didn’t get enough air play. Although his voice wasn’t showcased in exactly the right genre by his record label back in the 90’s on his debut release, he is truly a great talent….but he just didn’t get the push from the label to get the airplay on the radio stations. Just like now stations are paid to shove some records down our throats until the tune catches on. He wasn’t marketed correctly music wise, nor appearance wise…otherwise his career would have taken off.
Met Louie back in the early 90s…he was a humbled guy and treated me like just another guy. great voice.
His albums “Let’s Get Started” and Louie Cordero are also excellent. I’ve been searching for a copy of his CD from 2002 “Dance Love Work” but can’t find anything anywhere…shame. He was such a great singer and performer. I understand that he also had a career in Las Vegas many years ago.
I’m at Louis 1985/El Paso‘s Cantina in Long Beach. That was our version in Southern California of studio 54. Unbelievable/vibe. Incredible DJs playing all of the freestyle generation Latin music of our times. Incredible female/Madonna‘s running around. Louis would dominate every dance contest. I remember picking up his first album at music market in Costa Mesa featuring #Let’sGetStarted. And the girl who seduced the world/we also rocked out at a club called pinnapheenies on/Anton street. So much energy. Unmanned did us boys love to dance. The romance part with all these beauties came easy the fun was the physicality and the popping and locking to all of the freestyle / #CoverGirls #Noel #Shannon/ Let the music play people and never ever quit rocking out.
I have his Dance Love Work album. I listen to it in the car from time to time.
Can we find his music on the internet ??
I was absolutely crazy when Sittin’ in the lap of luxury came out in 1990. I was 19 at the time. I still love listening to Louie Louie he has a great voice plus very sexy.
