25 Years Ago in the Nineties: MC Hammer “Pray”

Oakland-born rapper MC Hammer has appeared on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart 10 times, all between 1990 and 1994. Among those 10 appearances, six hit the Top 40 and five reached the Top 10. While “U Can’t Touch This” is his most well-known hit, Hammer’s most successful hit in terms of chart performance came two singles later, with “Pray,” which was built around sampling of Prince’s “When Doves Cry.” Exactly 25 years ago, “Pray” by MC Hammer was in the midst of a two-week run at its peak position of number 2.
