Alabama-born singer Percy Sledge made 14 appearances on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart, with five of those songs reaching the Top 40 and four hitting the Top 20. His only Top 10 hit was also his only number one hit, and it came with his first charting single, “When a Man Loves a Woman.” Exactly 50 years ago, Sledge’s “When a Man Loves a Woman” climbed to the top of the chart for a four-week reign.
