25 Years Ago in the Nineties: P.M. Dawn “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss”
Exactly 25 years ago, Billboard magazine changed the way they calculated the Hot 100 chart, with new methods for collecting data on sales and airplay. With these changes came new patterns for the rise and fall of songs on the chart, as songs rose more quickly and fell more slowly than they had in the past. The debut of the new chart also produced a rise to number one for the first charting single for New Jersey-based duo P.M. Dawn. According to Hot 100 records, P.M. Dawn’s song “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss” would have been at number one for at least two weeks already going into the week of the change. Officially, though, “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss” took over the top spot exactly 25 years ago for a one-week stay at number one.
