It Happened 50 Years Ago: The New Vaudeville Band “Winchester Cathedral”

In 1966 musician Geoff Stephens put together a group called the New Vaudeville Band that released one record, Winchester Cathedral. The album’s name matched the name of the novelty song that was the group’s first of two singles to appear on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart as well as the group’s only Top 40 hit. In fact, exactly 50 years ago, the song “Winchester Cathedral” rose to number one for a three-week reign.
