In addition to his career as a politician, Illinois Republican Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen released a series of spoken-word albums. His spoken-word projects produced just one appearance on Billboard‘s Hot 100, though that one appearance turned into a Top 40 hit. Exactly 50 years ago, Dirksen’s “Gallant Men” climbed to a peak position of number 29.
