DEF: Michael Jackson/Paul McCartney “The Girl Is Mine”
In the early 1980s, Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney hit the Top 2 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart with two duets. The first of those two hits, “The Girl Is Mine,” was one of seven Top 10 hits from Jackson’s Thriller album. Exactly 35 years ago, “The Girl Is Mine” climbed to its peak position of number 2. To commemorate that anniversary, “The Girl Is Mine” by Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney is today’s Daily Eighties Flashback.
Did you know The Girl Is Mine was considered controversial at the time and some radio stations refused to play it, because of it’s interracialal romance? It was assumed that the girl in question was white and they felt uncomfortable for a black man to claim she love him more than a white man and also to say “the doggona girl is mine” .. knowing “doggone” was a euphemisim for “God damn” … very interesing eh? It makes sense when you think about it – this song while considered “fluff” by song critics, was actually a very BOLD move on Michael’s part ..
