You’re So Vain

In the 1970s, Carly Simon enjoyed the most successful period of her career, which included five top 10 singles between 1971 and 1978.  Exactly 40 years ago, the biggest of these hits, “You’re So Vain,” hit number one on Billboard‘s Hot 100 for a three-week stay.  It was Simon’s only number one hit, and it became something akin to a signature song, especially because, despite much speculation by others, Simon has not publicly indicated who the song is about, though NBC Sports executive Dick Ebersol won the right to learn that answer privately back in 2003.

Simon’s most recent appearance in the Top 40 happened in 2001, when she was featured, along with Missy Elliott, on the Janet Jackson single “Son of a Gun (I Betcha Think This Song Is About You)” which reached a peak position of number 28 and which, as the title of the song suggests, drew on “You’re So Vain.”
