25th Anniversary Rick Roll

In recent years Rick Astley’s song “Never Gonna Give You Up” has become known for the phenomenon known as “rickrolling,” in which someone directs you to a link that is supposedly about something else, only to lead you instead to the “Never Gonna Give You Up” video.  Exactly 25 years ago, “Never Gonna Give You Up” rolled its way to the top of Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart for a two-week stay.  The song was Astley’s debut single, and it would be the first of two consecutive number one’s for the English singer, as “Together Forever” hit the top for one week a little more than three months later.

In all, Astley scored a total of seven Top 40 hits between 1988 and 1994, five of which hit the Top 10, though “Never Gonna Give You Up” and “Together Forever” remain his only two chart-topping singles.  For more on Astley, you can check out his official website, though you might also want to check this site out as well.
