99 Luftballoons

Exactly 30 years ago, German singer Nena and her eponymously named band rose to a peak position of number 2 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart with “99 Luftballoons.”  The song, which conveys a protest of nuclear weapons armament, was the band’s only single to hit the Hot 100, though both Nena the singer and Nena the band have scored a multiplicity of hits in native Germany.
