Cher’s Believe

After hitting number 1 in 1965 with “I Got You Babe” alongside her husband Sonny Bono, Cher scored three chart-topping singles on her own in the early 1970s, as “Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves,” “Half-Breed,” and “Dark Lady” all turned the trick.  Those hits occurred within the first wave of Cher’s solo success, spanning from 1965 to 1974, during which she hit the Top 40 eleven times.  After a 5-year hiatus, Cher hit the Top 40 again in 1979, when “Take Me Home” peaked at number 8.  Then, following a break of more than 8 years, Cher hit the Top 40 nine more times between 1987 and 1992, peaking the highest during that period at number 3 with 1989’s “If I Could Turn Back Time.”

Cher then went another 7 years without a Top 40 hit, but her return was a big one.  Exactly 15 years ago, Cher hit number 1 once again, as “Believe” rose to the top spot.  Though Cher did not follow “Believe” with additional Top 40 hits, the song would go on to spend 4 weeks at the top of the chart, making it the biggest hit of Cher’s career.
