DEF: Michael Bolton “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay”

While New Haven, Connecticut-born singer Michael Bolton is a very accomplished songwriter, and he has written or co-written a number of his own hit singles, Bolton has also built a substantial part of his career on remakes. He has taken remakes of “Georgia On My Mind” and “To Love Somebody” into the Top 40, and his two number one hits — “How Am I Supposed To Live Without You” and “When A Man Loves A Woman” — are remakes, though in fairness, Bolton co-wrote the original “How Am I Supposed To Live Without You,” which became a Top 20 hit for Laura Branigan.

Bolton’s first remake to appear on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart was his cover of Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay.” On this date in 1988, Bolton’s version reached a peak position of number 11, where it would spend two weeks.
