DEF: Merry Clayton “Yes”

The 1987 film Dirty Dancing produced a lot of hit songs, including the number one hit “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life” by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes as well as Top 5 hits in Eric Carmen’s “Hungry Eyes” and Patrick Swayze’s “She’s Like The Wind.” Though not quite with same success as those other hits, the film also produced a return to Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart for New Orleans-born singer Merry Clayton.

Between 1970 and 1975, Clayton hit the chart four times, topping out with “Keep Your Eye On The Sparrow,” a song from the television series Baretta that peaked at number 45 in 1975.  In 1988, Clayton matched that peak position with “Yes,” her song from Dirty Dancing. On this date in 1988, “Yes” climbed to its number 45 peak position for a one-week stay.

Merry Clayton’s “Yes” is today’s Daily Eighties Flashback.
