Abracadabra
Steve Miller (sometimes just as himself, sometimes as the Steve Miller Band) had a string of top 40 hits during the decade between 1973 and 1983 that included three singles that hit number 1 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart (“The Joker,” “Rock’n Me,” and “Abracadabra”) and one single that peaked at number 2 (“Fly Like An Eagle”). Exactly 30 years ago today, the third of those chart-topping singles, “Abracadabra,” rose to number 1. The song actually fell from the top slot the next week, but two weeks after that, it made a return to number 1 for a second week, breaking its tie with Miller’s other two number 1 singles to become the biggest hit of Miller’s career.
Not only was “Abracadabra” Miller’s biggest hit, it was also his last, at least in terms of hitting the Top 40, though he would hit the Hot 100 a few times more, most recently with “Wide River,” which peaked at number 64 in 1993.
The band continues to make and play music. Their most recent record, Let Your Hair Down, was released in 2011, and later this month, they are scheduled to play a couple dates in Oklahoma and Texas as part of their 2012 World Tour. For more, check out the Steve Miller Band’s official website.
