In late 1988/early 1989, both Heart and Cheap Trick were experiencing phenomenal success.
For Heart, this time period marked a brief respite between two of three highly successful consecutive albums to end the 1980s and open the 1990s. Heart had scored four Top 10 hits on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart with their 1985 self-titled album and then had hit the Top 20 with three singles off their 1987 album Bad Animals. In 1990, their album Brigade would spawn three more Top 40 hits.
Meanwhile, after failing to hit the Top 40 for more than eight years, in the summer of 1988, Cheap Trick had scored a number one hit with their song “The Flame,” and they had gone on to reach the Top 40 with two more singles from their Lap of Luxury album.
So,when Heart lead singer Ann Wilson and Cheap Trick lead singer Robin Zander teamed up in late 1988 for the song “Surrender To Me,” which was featured in the film Tequila Sunrise, the single stood a great chance at success — a success that it did attain. On this date in 1989, “Surrender To Me” reached a peak position of number 6, where it would spend one week.
Today, “Surrender to Me” by Ann Wilson and Robin Zander is the Daily Eighties Flashback.
