DEF: Irene Cara “Fame”

New York City-born actress and musician Irene Cara broke through on the pop music scene in 1980 when her song “Fame,” from the film of the same name in which she also starred, reached the Top 10 and won an Academy Award. Not only was “Fame” Cara’s first appearance on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart; it was the first of three Top 10 hits she would amass, all during the 1980s.
