DEF: J.D. Souther “Anything But Love”

Exactly 30 years ago, the sitcom Anything But Love, which starred Jamie Lee Curtis and Richard Lewis, began its four-season run on ABC. The show’s theme song, which was featured as an instrumental version after the first season, had the same title as the show and was written and performed by Detroit-born musician J.D. Souther. To commemorate the anniversary of the start of the show Anything But Love, the song “Anything But Love” by J.D. Souther is today’s Daily Eighties Flashback.

I never understood why they stripped this theme of its wonderful lyrics after season 1. I was working at a video store in West Hollywood way back when, chatting up some customer about theme songs, and told him my all time favorite was the theme from Anything But Love. That customer turned out to be Mr. Souther.

The tune with lyrics was short but terrific. The images which flashed briefly as the song unfolded were a good way to get a gist of the show. Jamie Lee Curtis was so pretty, too.

Wow Chris! That is a cool story. I always like theme song more so than the show. What did Mr. Souther say to you after you told him that.

    He said, “Thank you.”
