DEF: Madonna “Like a Prayer”

In early March of 1989, Madonna released her song and video “Like a Prayer” as the first single from her album of the same name, which was released later that same month. The video also released a torrent of controversy because of the ways it invoked racial and Christian religious imagery. The song skyrocketed to the top of Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart, reaching the pinnacle position exactly 30 years today, in just its sixth week on the chart, to begin a three-week run at number one.
