DEF: Madonna “Like A Virgin”

By the time Madonna‘s song “Like A Virgin” was released as a single, she had already hit the Top 20 with her first three songs to reach Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart, including the Top 10 with the  second and third of those songs. “Like A Virgin,” though, propelled Madonna to new heights and arguably became the song that established Madonna as the superstar who go on to be one of the most successful popular music acts of all time.

Exactly 30 years ago, “Like A Virgin” hit number one, where it would stay for six weeks. To date, it’s the second-longest running number one hit of Madonna’s career, with only the seven weeks that “Take A Bow” spent at number one in 1995 outlasting it at the top. Still, though “Take A Bow” remained at number one for one more week, “Like A Virgin” would seem to be the more significant song for Madonna’s career.

“Like A Virgin” is today’s Daily Eighties Flashback.
