DEF: Meco “Empire Strikes Back”
Building off the phenomenal success of the film Star Wars, Pennsylvania-born musician Domenico Monardo, better known as Meco, hit number one on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart in 1977 with a disco version of the film’s theme song. With the release of the sequel film, The Empire Strikes Back, Meco returned to the Top 20 for a version of that film’s theme song. These were Meco’s only two Top 20 hits, though he did hit the Top 40 with disco versions of the themes from Close Encounters of the Third Kind and The Wizard of Oz in between the two Star Wars film themes.
On this date in 1980, Meco’s “Empire Strikes Back” reached its peak position of number 18, where it would spend two weeks. Today, the song is the Daily Eighties Flashback.
