George Jones and the Hot 100
Exactly one year ago, country music legend George Jones died at the age of 81. Given his tremendous success on the country charts, it’s hard to call Jones a no-hit wonder, though technically in terms of the pop music chart – Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart — he fits the criteria. Including his own singles as well as singles in which he teamed up with other artists or was featured on other artists’ singles, Jones hit the Hot 100 seven times, spanning from his song “White Lightning” in 1959 to his appearance as a featured artist on Aaron Lewis’ “Country Boy” in 2010. Yet, Jones never made it higher than the number 73 peak position of that first single, “White Lightning.” By contrast, “White Lightning” was the first of 10 number 1 hits for Jones on the country chart.
