In Motion for 25 Years
St. Elmo’s Fire is frequently considered one of the foundational 1980s brat pack films, with a cast that included Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, and Rob Lowe. The soundtrack to the film featured John Parr’s song “St. Elmo’s Fire (Man In Motion),” the video for which can be seen above. While Parr reached number 23 with “Naughty Naughty” earlier in the year, “Man In Motion” was the only major hit of his career–and it was a big one, hitting number 1 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart 25 years ago today for the first week of a two-week reign at the top. Parr co-wrote the song with one of the most prolific song writers/producers in pop music history–David Foster. Foster also hit the Top 20 himself with a tune from the film. The instrumental piece “Love Them from St. Elmo’s Fire” hit number 15 a few weeks later.
