Information Society
Exactly 25 years ago, Minneapolis-based band Information Society peaked at number 3 with their first single to hit Billboard‘s Hot 100, “What’s On Your Mind (Pure Energy).” The song would not only be the first Hot 100 hit for the band; it would be their biggest hit, though the band did crack the Top 10 again with their follow-up single, “Walking Away,” which peaked at number 9.
Both singles became known, in part, for their sampling of dialogue from the classic Star Trek television series, as they contained lines from Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Dr. McCoy.
While “What’s On Your Mind (Pure Energy)” and “Walking Away” marked the only forays into the Top 10 for Information Society, they did peak at number 28 a couple years later.
So do they owe their fortunes to Gene Roddenberry?
