In 1973, radio and television personality Byron MacGregor recorded a single in which he read a newspaper editorial about the United States over the Detroit Symphony Orchestra playing “America the Beautiful.” Exactly 50 years ago, that record, “Americans,” dropped from the peak position of number 4 it reached a week earlier on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart.
