It Happened 50 Years Ago: Gary Lewis and the Playboys “This Diamond Ring”
Comedian and actor Jerry Lewis’ son Gary first charted on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart with his band the Playboys in January 1965. It was a highly successful start for  the band, as that single — “Diamond Ring” — quickly rose to number 1. Exactly 50 years ago, “Diamond Ring” climbed into that number 1 position, where it would stay for two weeks.
The success didn’t stop there for Gary Lewis and the Playboys, as over the next year and a half they hit the Top 10 with each of their first seven charting singles.
