It Happened 50 Years Ago: Jay and the Americans “Come A Little Bit Closer”
New York City-based Jay and the Americans hit the Top 10 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart four times, all in the 1960s. Spread out across the decade, these hits included their first charting single, “She Cried,” which reached number 5 in 1962; “Cara, Mia,” which hit number 4 in 1965; and “This Magic Moment,” which peaked at number 6 in 1969.
The band’s biggest hit, though, came in 1964, when “Come A Little Bit Closer” rose to number 3. Exactly 50 years ago, “Come A Little Bit Closer” hit that peak position, where it would spend two weeks.
