It Happened 50 Years Ago: John Fred & His Playboy Band “Judy in Disguise (With Glasses)

Baton Rouge, Louisiana-born musician John Fred and his band, the Playboys (later called His Playboy Band), made three appearances on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart. Just one of those songs, though, reached the Top 40, and exactly 50 years ago, that song — “Judy in Disguise (With Glasses),” the title of which parodies The Beatles’ “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” — climbed to number one for a two-week reign.
