It Happened 50 Years Ago: Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs “Lil’ Red Riding Hood”
Dallas-based group Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs appeared on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart nine times, with six of those songs reaching the Top 40 and two hitting the Top 10. Their first Top 10 hit was their most famous song, “Wooly Bully,” which peaked at number 2 for two weeks in 1965. Exactly 50 years ago, the band’s second Top 10 hit, “Lil’ Red Riding Hood,” matched the success of “Wooly Bully” by climbing to number 2 for its own two-week run.
