Lean On Me
Exactly 40 years ago today, Bill Withers hit the top of Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart with the only number one hit of his career as “Lean On Me” ascended to the pinnacle position for the first week of a three-week stay. “Lean On Me” was the second of four top five hits that Withers scored in his career, following “Ain’t No Sunshine” and preceding “Use Me” and the duet “Just The Two Of Us” with Grover Washington, Jr.
“Lean On Me” also belongs on the list of songs that have hit number one for two different artists. In March 1987, Club Nouveau topped the Hot 100 for two weeks with a remake of Withers’ tune.
