Metal Music Is Just Morse Code
The other day my iPod kept throwing me metal all day with the likes of Godsmack, Metallica, Megadeth and Slipknot. I like all kinds of music. Duke Ellington said, “There are only two kinds of music, good and bad.” My iPod has jazz, hip-hop, R&B, metal, rock, country, classical, comedy, polka, pop and even a drop of blue grass. After listening to all of these kinds of music, I noticed that when it comes to metal, the rhythm resembles Morse code. As an Eagle Scout, I studied this early form of communication and still know many of these rhythmic patterns. The dots and dashes create letters which are used to create words. Most of us know the Morse cord signal for S.0.S. which is … (dot dot dot) — (dash dash dash) … (dot dot dot). If you take even this simple S.O.S. pattern (dah and dit) and tap some heavy metal guitar riffs, you have got a song.
