Monthly Mixtape: July
Run For Cover
Summer is heating up and that means it’s time for a new mixtape. This month’s theme is cover music, songs that were originally by one artist and done by another. Many of these songs see radical changes in genre, timbre, and overall mood from the originals, and that makes the experience more unpredictable. A heavy metal cover of a beloved folk rock song? More likely than you think. Expectancy violation theory is a communication theory that looks at how an individual reacts to changes in norms or expectations, so think of this mixtape as a case study in this theory. Personally I enjoy having my expectations shattered, so when I see the song (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction being covered by Devo, I hope it’s nothing like the original.
It’s a cover playlist. Get it?
