The Day of Broken Hearts
Apparently, in the 1970s, August 7 was the day for songs about broken and breaking hearts to go to number one for month-long runs. Exactly 40 years ago today, in 1971, the Bee Gees hit the top of Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart for the first week of a four-week run with “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?” Then, exactly five years later, on August 7, 1976, Elton John and Kiki Dee hit number 1 for the first week of their four-week run with “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.” Both are classics that can still be heard regularly in various capacities today (though we often hear the Al Green version of the Bee Gees’ song instead of the band’s original). Which, though, would get your vote as the better “breaking/broken heart” song? Check out each song and then answer in the poll below.Â
