The Escape Club
25 years ago, London-based rock band The Escape Club hit number 1 with their first single to chart on Billboard‘s Hot 100, “Wild, Wild West.” The song, which offered a critique of Western foreign policy complete with the line “Ronnie’s got a new gun” that referred to U.S. president Ronald Reagan, was the biggest hit of the band’s career, though it wasn’t their only hit. The follow-up single, “Shake for the Sheik,” peaked at number 28 in 1989, and in 1991 the band hit the Top 10 for a second time, as “I’ll Be There” peaked at number 8.
